The House Sparrow is one of the most common birds living close to man and is resident in Britain. A group of House Sparrows is called a ‘host’ or ‘tribe’ and some of these courageous little birds will even venture into homes where they are offered food. They are gregarious characters which can be spotted all year round twittering incessantly. You might catch a House Sparrow bathing in sand or dust as it’s an important part of the birds’ hygiene, and helps them to get rid of annoying parasites concealed in their feathers.

Blue Tits are often one of the most frequent visitors to the bird garden. As they are such a common sight, they can often be overlooked, but look closely and you’ll see a beautifully colourful bird with its bold blue cap, yellow belly and green and blue back. These incredibly agile birds are rewarding to watch and as they are very adaptable, they are usually the quickest to exploit any new food source, quickly learning to use any new feeder. They are so opportunistic that in some areas Blue Tits even learnt to pierce milk bottle tops for the cream!

Nuthatches are busy, agile birds that can live to be over ten years old. They use their powerful bill to hammer open nuts and make such a loud noise that you’re likely to suspect there’s a woodpecker in your garden, but look more closely to be sure!
